Swatch Knitting and Hooking

$0.00

We’re looking for volunteers!
Would you like to have fun trying out new yarns, without having to buy them? We’re looking for knitters and crocheters who would help us with making swatches for our shop!
At Magic Hour Yarn Shop, we know that yarnslingers love to feel the yarns they are thinking of buying. It’s lovely to squeeze a big ball of something luscious, but it’s also helpful to feel what the
fabric feels like when knitted up. Our problem is – We have SO MANY yarns, it’s just impossible for me to keep up with the swatches!
If you are available Thursdays from 1 pm to 3 pm, come on into the shop, and we’ll get you set up!
It’s simple – We will provide a ball, skein or hank of yarn and the appropriate needles or hook, and a cup of coffee, and you relax in our comfy Happy Stitching Lounge and chat with other swatchers while you knit up a sample swatch for the shop. You choose your stitch pattern, as long as you end up with a 4″ x 4″ knitted or crocheted swatch that is representative of that yarn.
There is no cost for this activity. However, please note that the swatches, yarns and needles and hooks stay in the shop, even when complete. (Sorry, no you don’t get to take home the leftovers!)
But you do get to try out some very cool yarns and wools for free! You can also try out some new stitches (we have plenty of texture stitch patterns) if you want to, or just go Garter. No pressure, no rush.
Interested? Call or email us, and we’ll get a basket ready for you!

Sweater Knitting

$125.00

Are you ready to go from Beginner Knitter to Advanced Beginner? Have you got your eye on a beautiful cardigan, but not sure if you have the skills? We can help get you there!

We have sifted through hundreds of cardigan patterns that are appropriate for advanced beginners, and chosen a dozen or so of the best. Some are easier, some a bit more challenging – you can choose your level of difficulty. The recommended yarns are available from our (Canadian) supplier, and can be ordered and received in good time.

We will also help you select an appropriate substitute yarn if you don’t want the recommended, so you can get the result you’re looking for. And we have so many yarns to choose from! Yarns purchased for your group project (including those that will be ordered) will be discounted for you at 15% off our regular price.

There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions. Then there will be instruction, tips and help with the current week’s tasks, with a chance to knit together for the rest of our two hours. You’re welcome to stay and knit all day if you want to!

Your materials pack (required) will include two pairs of circular needles of the sizes needed, crochet hook (for fixing mistakes), notes, and a variety of small, useful accessories.

Our first meeting will be for all participants to introduce themselves, select their pattern and yarn, get measured for their cardi, and generally prepare to get started.

The cost for this course is $40 for the materials pack (not including the yarn) and $100 for registration. The full course will be 6 weeks made up of 4 weeks of instruction, with an additional two weeks of knitting together to help you stay focused and give you chance to ask further questions. This should get you to a place where you can finish your project. Continued support will be available if needed.

Toe-Up Socks Class

$100.00

The $25 materials pack (required) includes a ball of yarn big enough for one pair of socks, a set of double-pointed Knitpro Cubics needles, a small crochet hook for fixing mistakes, and other small accessories that will help you get a great pair of socks. The registration fee is $75.

Knitting socks from the toe up has many advantages! Yet most people, even sock knitters, have never tried it.

We have a great course for you! Over three 2-hour sessions, you will learn
• Judy’s Magic Cast-on, and why it works so well for toe-up socks
• How many stitches to cast on?
• How to knit socks on 3 or 4 double-pointed needles
• When to change colours for the toe
• How to measure your knitting
• Fixing mistakes, including avoiding “ladders” and how to fix them

In the first of 3 two hour classes, you will choose your yarn and needle size, start the cast-on and get going on the toe. You’ll soon be ready to put in the heel-holding stitches, and finish the leg. Note that we do not use a specific pattern. This is a generic “blank canvas” type of sock, that you can afterwards adapt to add whatever embellishments you like.

In the last class, we will finish the heel and you can learn how to avoid those pesky little holes that show up in the corners. We’ll then review Judy’s Magic Cast-on so you can avoid the “second sock syndrome”.

There are no more than six people in each class, so there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions. Then there will be instruction, tips and help with the current week’s tasks, with a chance to knit together for the rest of our two hours. You’re welcome to stay and knit all day if you want to!
